Bespoke CPD
I very much enjoy being asked to support schools and multi-academy trusts on their journeys to improving standards and performance in maths.
I have worked with numerous maths departments across the West Midlands, and I offer a number of support systems to help improve performance. These could be delivered face-to-face or through online platforms if preferred:
- carry out departmental reviews with full written and verbal reports with areas of strength and suggestions for improvements.
- work with leaders to support curriculum development and departmental management, as well as at trust level.
- work with individuals on their own planning and performance in the classroom.
- deliver departmental bespoke CPD sessions.
- deliver conference-style presentations to groups of schools.
- deliver workshops to pupils on a range of maths areas, including topics to exam preparation.
Below you can see just some of the feedback I have received. Please contact me on mail@tommanners.co.uk if you wish to discuss how I could support you and your team.
Tom is a maths professional and educational leader of the highest order. I had the pleasure of working with Tom on the national roll out of the programme of maths learning and Tom was organised, intelligent, efficient and a great leader of his national team. Tom is a thought-leader on maths education and is a do-er in terms of being able to roll out programmes across several schools. He is also a fantastic public speaker and delivers his talks with dynamism, passion and intelligence. It has been a pleasure working with Tom and I hope to be able to in the future again.
Tom is a very engaging speaker and teacher trainer and I'm totally aligned with his stance on maths education. Tom was a dedicated, hard-working and supportive Head of Maths and is excellent when it comes to leading a department through a change.
Tom has been an incredible support system to myself directly, both in his unique views and conversations on mathematical pedagogy but also his reflection of teaching industry and the dealings of staffing retention and recruitment. He has kept me reflective and on many occasions reminded me why i enjoy teaching taking it back to the main focus of the KIDS

Tom has actively encouraged us as a department to use bar modelling across a variety of topics as a way of facilitating learning. The impact of this has been profound, and has been evidenced all the way up to Key stage 4 with pupils using bar modelling as a tool for successfully answering GCSE questions

During my time working with Tom Manners, I was able to develop my own practice thanks to his support. Even though I already had many years in the classroom, I felt that my teaching improved significantly. From thinking differently about the mathematical language I use, to my behaviour management techniques and production of resources. One of the most important of these being the ‘effective’ use of mini whiteboards. Yes, I have used them for years, but effectively, I thought so, until I watched and had support from Tom

Tom inspired me and my whole team, to improve our practice. He supported everyone from trainees and NQTs, to experienced members of staff. He explained how important the choice of SOW was for NQTs to enable them to successfully plan lessons with their limited experience. Since I have worked with Tom, I have moved schools and I have been able to implement changes based on my experiences with him. My team are developing their teaching practice and their improvement has been recognised by leadership. I would not have been able to do this without previously developing those skills with Tom.

Tom demonstrated how to lead CPD sessions to the department in a way that presented ideas carefully and encouraged teachers to develop their own teaching and discover changes that needed to be made rather than telling people exactly what to do. He demonstrated this by running sessions himself for me to see and then by helping me think of questions I wanted to discuss with my department. Tom also helped me to improve my observation skills of teachers in the department. Tom was instrumental in developing my skills when I first became 2ic/ head of KS3 and I would not have been an effective leader without his help in all aspects of his role as well as (and perhaps most importantly for me) his confidence in and support of me

Tom's enthusiasm and energy for learning in general, and maths specifically, is both evident and infectious. Tom is also a supportive and considerate colleague who understands what it means to lead a cohesive group of individuals, with a keen eye for his staff's strengths and areas for development, and how to encourage them to capitalise on the former and address the latter

Tom has plenty of energy and enthusiasm, not just for the subject, but also for the development of the staff he has worked with. He is a joy to watch ‘do his thing’ with an endless positivity about his role/purpose CPD.

Tom Manners is one of the most enthusiastic educators I have had the pleasure to work with. He is dynamic and inspiring not only with his delivery in a classroom but also in his approach to training staff. Tom shows an outstanding understanding of curriculum and the challenges faced by young people today with regards to achieving their mathematics GCSE. Whilst working with him it became obvious that his enthusiasm was contagious and he was able to engage even some of the most challenging pupils. His passion for the subject and for educating others, both pupils and colleagues alike, is at the forefront of everything Tom does. He really is an inspiration to work alongside.

Tom is an excellent classroom practitioner; there is literally no end to his creativity and enthusiasm. I have seen students from a range of backgrounds and strengths throw themselves into activities that Tom has facilitated. He brings maths to life, forming positive relationships with students and leading them to create new ambitions and then strive to reach them. Tom puts students central to everything he does, this is why they love him
